Sometimes my mind drifts to a times long gone when I was just a mere boy. A time when your mind was filled with magic and imagination. When we dreamed up great worlds where mystical beings lived.
There was a time I truly believed these worlds existed beyond just my imagination.
Every time I go back through my memories to this time one thing fills my head.
I remember walking through the woods. It was Autumn so brightly colored leaves covered the forest floor under my feet. The air was fresh and brisk with cool fall air.
I looked for the last of the birds as the prepared for the long winter ahead of them.
My eyes were drawn to a bluebird. I smiled and pulled out a camera to capture the rare sight of this bird.
Just then the wind blew and pulled my orange scarf away from me.
I quickly put the camera away and ran after my scarf the leaves crunching under my feet.
I paused out of breath. I had lost sight of my scarf and had no hope of finding it in the leaves that had the very similar colors of my scarf.
I was down, as it was my favorite scarf and I had owned it for years. I trudged back in the direction of my house thinking about what I would tell my mom. Just then I saw a glimmer of light out of the corner of my eye. I glanced over and rubbed my eyes convinced it was just a trick of the light. Only, I saw it again.
It was just a simple flash of light, almost blue green in color. It would be in front of me for a second before disappearing
My young mind, curious to see what was making the light, followed each blink. After following the blinks for a while I came to a clearing I didn't even know was there. I had explored this entire forest many times.
Here the grass was green instead of yellow and the trees were not the large oaks of the forest and had not a colored leaf on their branches.
My eyes drifted to the center of the clearing where I saw a pile of orange fabric. I walked over and discovered my favorite orange scarf. I picked it up and this time wrapped it tightly around my neck so as not to lose it again.
I looked for the lights that had led me here but saw no sign of them at all. I sighed disappointed to not have found the source of the blinks. I turned to leave when it dawned on me that I didn't know where I was. I sat down by a tree my mind racing. Someone would surely find me eventually right?
I closed my eyes a tired feeling falling over me. "Don't worry child, you are safe. Sleep, you will wake soon" Said a small calming voice, The last thing I thought before drifting off was, Fairy.
I woke up in my bed. My scarf on my bed post along with my coat. It had all been a dream.
The dream had felt so real to me back then. I know though that magic has no place in the real world. We all wish to return to the world we dream as a kid.
I wonder about the dream often. I see myself in my children when they go around speaking of fairies and other creatures of the sort and when my wife sends them off to bed with the words in my dreams.

"Don't worry child, you are safe. Sleep, you will wake soon..."

    THE END
