Aspen Kelly - Raising Awareness
You've probably never heard of Aspen Kelly. If you met her in the street, you'd not even realise. But maybe you have heard of a disease called leukemia.
Leukemia is 'cancer of the body's blood-forming tissues, including the bone marrow and the lymphatic system'. It can affect the white blood cells in your body, which fight infection, and produces cells that don't work properly.
Aspen Kelly is a twelve-year-old leukemia-sufferer who lives in Oklahoma, America. Her life currently exists only in her home and the hospital, where she goes through her difficult treatment.
The thing Aspen wants to do most is travel the world, but, due to her condition, she can't. Instead, she has asked, through Facebook, for people to send her letters and postcards from all around the world, to arrive in time for her thirteenth birthday, which is on the 1st of September.
So far, Aspen has received over 1000 cards and letters, including one from actor Tom Hanks. She is overjoyed to finally see what it is like in other countries, even if only through pictures.
When I read Aspen's story, I just had to send her a letter, and a birthday gift. But, even now that it is safely on a plane to America, I feel as if I could do more. Much more.
So I am sending out a plea. Scratch is a diverse place, with users from all over the world. The world that Aspen longs to see.
Please take the time to write a letter, send a postcard, anything - every little thing that she receives in a ray of hope in Aspen's life, a window into the outside. If you send her something, please comment in this studio or on the project.
This is her address:
