So, I have a thumb drive with most of the Sixtale soundtrack, so I wanted to convert those files to .mp3. I didn't have any way to do that as .band files aren't recognized anywhere but Garageband (That's the program I used to make and save those files) or some other unknown place. But, I don't have garageband on this computer. So I found this thing that was supposed to let you download garageband. Just garageband. Nothing else. But, then, google chrome's window went below it's initial placement. And I saw The top of what looked like Chrome used a base from Internet Explorer and now it's basically Internet Explorer but Chrome. Or, it looked like old Chrome.(I mean it looked like Chrome but old-style I don't know any times Chrome looked that different from how it does now)
And I was like, 'That's weird' And then I saw on the taskbar, bluescale google chrome. And on the top it said Webdiscover. And the problem is, so with almost all windows, you have an X in the top right corner. This window did not have an X in the top right corner. And I found out it was called 'Chromium' So I thought, 'There is no way this is safe. I mean Chromium? Sounds like a rip-off of Chrome!' so my dad came (Thank god he was here, he was the reason we solved this problem) He was confused too. So I noticed it was pinned to the taskbar, which was weird, because I didn't tell the computer to pin this to taskbar. So I went and said 'Unpin this from taskbar' And my dad was like, "Yeah, I don't want this on the taskbar" So we unpinned from taskbar. But, we still didn't have a way to get out of Chromium as it didn't have an X at the top right corner. So my dad was like, "Sometimes you download something and they sneak other things in with it. That's probably how Chromium got to be" while garageband was downloading, other things popped up. Dashlane, Winzip, DriverRestore, and easy search. But we could close all those windows. So at this point, we knew Chromium was top priority. So, I was like, does Chromium have a file? I went to the folder that has all the files, and in the search, I typed 'Chromium' and I found the file that was supposedly Chromium. and I deleted it. And I found out, that whenever you delete something, it goes in the recycle bin. I went to the recycle bin,and deleted it permanently. I restarted the computer. Chromium came back. So, my dad went ctrl + alt + delete. He went to the task manager, and told it to uninstall/ stop running. It said it couldn't. The computer could stop Chromium. So, as a last resort, we went to Malwarebytes and had it scan the computer's files. We had 1 threat at the start. Wediscover.net. 5 threats next, 4 of them were Webdiscover.net, 1 was Bestbuy.com. And then it took a ramp. 92 threats. Webdiscover.net
and at the end we had 430 threats! Mostly Webdiscover.net! So we had all the potential threats and Maleware and there was a button that said 'Quarantine selected' and I pressed it. And waited for it to be done. No more Chromium. Thank god Malwarebytes existed!
Another part of the story that wasn't mentioned before was I found the search, 'Is Chomium a virus?' Chromium itself isn't, but you still shouldn't use it as it's content is mostly viruses and malware and stuff
Lesson 1. Don't download garageband on windows. It only works on mac.
Lesson 2. Webdiscover.net is a bad thing
Lesson 3. If you don't already have them, get Malwarebytes, Spybot, or both
Other notes from the friends here:
1.Chromium's virus was removed by google, BUT CAME BACK!!!
2. Hijack might be a good idea to use
3. There's another version of Chromium out there, that isn't a virus
