Good free web hosting?

I'm looking for some good free web hosting that can host non-static pages. Support for Python or PHP scripting would also be useful, and a somewhat good domain name that comes along with it.

You might be able to get low quality hosting and a subdomain for free but…

You will never get a domain name for free. Not even freenom. Why? Because those free domains aren't yours, and freenom routinely hijack user's free domains and redirect them to a whole bunch of nasties.

You will need to buy a domain if you want one, that isn't something you can get for free, at all.
And.. you should probably look in to home hosting if you want to run a backend-powered site for free. Home hosting + Cloudflare + Domain is the cheapest option, as you only need to pay for the domain, but you might even be able to drop using cloudflare as well.

Glitch.com is nice. You get 20 projects that can run 24/7 for free if you ping them. They give you *.glitch.me domains, and support custom domains. If you don't need it online 24/7, it will sleep after 5 minutes, and the next visit to the site will show a loading screen while the server wakes back up.

Repl.it

Repl.it supports python, php, node and like over 50 more programming languages, the only downside is the domain is often a bit ugly, *.Your Username.repl.co

So if you were to use it I would plan out your username

If you want to get a bit fancy you could host a website on Glitch.com and have it send requests to your repl.co server

I was thinking of a subdomain. Sorry that I was unclear.

You can get free domains on freenom.com

Freenom isn't reliable, and that domain isn't yours. If you want a low cost domain, porkbun.com do .com domains for fairly cheap. $4.15 for first year, and then $8.56 every year after that. And $8.56 a year ain't a bad price.

I will vouch for the irreliability of Freenom – my own domain name from them randomly stopped working one day, and Freenom's domain registrar page showed my domain name as “available”. Fortunately, I was able to re-register it, but have rerouted all links to point to my new .com domain which I bought.

As for web hosting, as http://fastgood.cheap tells us, you have the following options of either:
  1. being free
  2. being stable
  3. non-static pages

You will only be able to ever have two of these at a time. GitHub Pages is the only host I know of that is both free and stable, but does not support “non-static pages” as you have indicated before. I have invested quite a bit of time in this from quite possibly the beginning of time and what you are asking for is generally not possible for free.

Home hosting is probably the closest you can get to truly free, albeit it requires having a machine you can run to host at home. A Raspberry Pi would work, or an old Dell Optiplex, doesn't need to be anything fancy. Can you consider it free if you already have hardware? Maybe…

Google apps script is also good. I recommend using it for an API and having a GitHub Pages static site call the API from the client side. That way, you can get a non-terrible URL, instead of https://script.google.com/macros/s/xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx/exec.

Sure, but your IP address will constantly change, you have a good chance of having internet access terminated, and the second criterion has not been met.

I've been using Freenom for years, never had a problem with it. I set a reminder every year to do a free domain renewal so my domains don't get taken away. I don't know if higher traffic domains get taken away because not many people visit my sites. As for hosting, I use Netlify as it's 100% free, reliable, and has many features. My actual webpages are stored on Github, but I could store them on Netlify if I wanted to.

IP addresses don't necessarily have to constantly change. I've had the same IP since we changed ISPs.

As for having Internet Access terminated. That's heavily ISP dependent, my ISP permits hosting services with residential broadband.

I assume the second criterion is stability? Internet access doesn't usually go down, and apart from that, not much can take down sites when they're hosted from a PC sat a metre away from you.

It's good, but it only works for static pages - you can't have any backend stuff in a github pages site

If you want scripting than probably go to glitch.me, Cloudflare Workers, and Heroku.

If you want something more like free domain, probably check out the GitHub Education pack.

There is a reason why free web hosting is free because it comes with its downsides. That’s not to say that you shouldn’t use it at all, however, there are times when you should stay away from it. It depends on what kind of website you want to host.

Learning should be free, and it’s totally OK to use a free web host if you want to learn the ropes of setting up a website.

If you’ve got any sort of blog, a personal portfolio, or a money-making website, you’re trying to make a good impression, right? It would never work with free web hosting. Free hosting doesn't have generally had a great reputation for speed, uptime, and availability. They also tend to shut down a lot.
