the recordings are already distorted before i play them in the project

Try varying the level for record. I haven't a Mac but must be a sort of Control Panel for the Sound Card.

i just tried changing the level and it didnt work

If the sound is distorted and awful maybe this might help you

When a sound file is imported into scratch , scratch automatically converts the file into a noticeably lower quality file . This does save time and reduce lag , but if the sound file was average quality to begin with then it will sound distorted and unintelligible . You need to record the audio at the highest quality possible to prevent this from happening ( preferably 44.1 kHz or more ) .

I am experiencing the same problem. I recorded my own audio and when I add it to my scratch project it sounds just AWFUL! Uploading it at different quality settings didn't help.
